If you appreciate unique designs, prefer Android over iOS, and want the best camera available on a smartphone, then run to your local carrier store this week and pick up the Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge.

I never stuck with a Galaxy S device for long due to my dislike of the plastic edges, faux leather backs, and cartoon UI. With the Galaxy S6 Edge Samsung finally showed it can release a beautifully designed smartphone for the masses.
While Samsung dominates the Android market, it wasn’t until the release of the Galaxy Note 4 that we saw premium design finally match industry-leading specifications. The Galaxy S6 Edge takes those premium design elements further to provide a nearly perfect smartphone.

Retail package and special offers

When you purchase a new smartphone today, you typically end up with a SIM card removal tool, USB cable, and A/C adapter. While these are included in the retail package, Samsung went further than HTC and Motorola by including the fantastic fast charger in the box rather than charging another $35 to purchase one separately. If a company supports the fast charging technology, then a charger showing off this functionality should be included.
Samsung also includes a white wired headset with inline controller. I have several sets of headphones with mics and controllers, but they are optimized for the iPhone and have limited functionality on Android. The included headset lets you control volume, control music/podcast playback, and launch Google Now or S Voice.
I encourage you to register your new Samsung purchase online too. Samsung will send you a coupon code for 50 percent off an accessory purchase of $50 or less.
Samsung also provides Galaxy Gifts, composed of 22 apps and services in essentials and gifts categories. Essentials include a business card scanner, SideSync 3.0, Car Mode, S Link, and more. The gifts category includes Uber ($25 in US rides), Fleksy keyboard, Amazon Kindle for Samsung, Endomondo Sports, VSCO Cam, Evernote, Pocket, and many more.
The T-Mobile Galaxy S6 Edge I purchased also includes a one-year free subscription to Netflix. I’ve been a subscriber for years, but can still redeem a free year. This benefit is worth over $100 with tax added.

Design

Samsung has both the Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge with the S6 Edge having a $100 price premium over the S6. After holding both smartphones at the launch event in Barcelona, I knew I was going to try the S6 Edge because I find the design of the curved glass to be more compelling.
There is some additional functionality included with the S6 Edge, such as having quick access to your five favorite contacts, getting a cool bedside clock on the edge, and having access to minimal notifications when the display is off. I personally don’t think these functions are worth the $100 premium, but I do find the design more unique.
I never place my phone face down so the novelty of the multi-color glowing when a favorite calls is lost on me.
The S6 Edge does have more glare reflecting off the edges, can be a bit difficult to read with full-width text, and is probably more likely to suffer broken glass than the Galaxy S6.
I was disappointed to hear that the US was not going to get the emerald green S6 Edge at launch, and may never get it, so I ordered the black sapphire model. Little did I realize that the word sapphire in the model color would actually mean the phone is a dark navy blue the majority of the time. The color is fantastic and to be honest the color did have some impact on my decision to go with the Galaxy S6 Edge instead of the HTC One M9.
Despite what you may have heard, the Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge doesn’t look much like an iPhone 6 at all. Yes, the bottom is similar in appearance, but the rest of the device follows the standard Galaxy layout.
The use of metal around the edges is beautiful while the front and back are both made of Gorilla Glass 4 material. I’ve owned the glass Sony Xperia Z3 for several months and have yet to drop or crack it so I am not as worried about all the glass as I would be if I did not already have a glass phone.
You can see fingerprints on the black sapphire model, but they wipe off easy enough and the color is so compelling that I am willing to wipe as needed.
The 5.1 inch quad HD Super AMOLED display looks amazing. I would have been fine with a 1080p display too, but I understand Samsung was able to improve the efficiency on this high resolution display so that battery life was not severely impacted.
The fingerprint scanner on all previous Samsung phones was garbage and the only time I could get it to work reliably was when I first programmed it. Thus, I am pleased to say that the new fingerprint scanner has worked 100 percent of the time for me with four fingers programmed to unlock the phone. You no longer have to drag your finger down the button, but you just place it over it like you do on the iPhone.
The Galaxy S6 Edge includes an integrated 2600 mAh battery. The first couple of days I used it saw me struggling to get more than 8 hours of moderate use. I then hard reset the phone and only loaded up about five third party apps. Battery life improved to about 12+ hours of moderate use so apps I had installed must be having issues with Lollipop.
While the battery life can’t match a couple of my bigger phones and those with larger capacity batteries, it is acceptable for the size of the device.
Samsung included fast charging and wireless charging in the Galaxy S6 Edge. Fast charging will let you plug in to a compatible charger and in 10 minutes gain four hours of usage time. PMA and Qi wireless charging are also supported so you can simply set your Galaxy S6 down on a charger to top it off at a much slower pace.

Camera

Android cameras have gotten better over the years, but I always found they lagged a bit behind the iPhone when it came to consistency in quality. I have taken hundreds of photos with the Galaxy S6 Edge over the last week and posted several full resolution samples in a Flickr album. My wife and I both picked the Galaxy S6 Edge as the winner in most every situation and all photos were taken in auto mode.
Samsung included a 16 megapixel camera with OIS and F1.9 aperture. The front facing camera is a 5 megapixel shooter that also captures great photos.
You can simply double press on the home button to launch the camera, even when you have fingerprint security in place. It is easy to switch modes and control settings on the camera.
Photo and video editors are included with highlight videos automatically created from your most recent photos. The iPhone 6 helps you capture great photos, but the Galaxy S6 Edge does too with more options available for you to get even more creative.

Software

The Galaxy S6 Edge runs Android Lollipop, 5.0.2, with a slimmed down version of TouchWiz. I did notice some pausing when launching apps for the first couple of days, but haven’t seen this for the last few days after slowly installing more of my preferred 3rd party apps.
Flipboard is the left most home screen panel loaded by default, similar to how HTC has its BlinkFeed panel. I like having Flipboard here and have not disabled it, but instead have customized it to my preferences and social networks.
It’s easy to customize the quick settings panel and I love having the flashlight right up there with a few other regularly accessed controls. The settings area has been cleaned up with a few prominent settings selected by default while also being completely customizable. Samsung has greatly improved the user interactions needed to customize your device.
The preinstalled Samsung apps I see on my phone include Hancom Office 2014, Memo, Milk Music, My Files, Peel Smart Remote, Voice Recorder, OneDrive, OneNote, Skype, Music, S Health, and S Voice. I personally hate the Samsung Calendar that lacks an agenda view so quickly installed Google Calendar.
Android phones from US wireless carriers all contain non-removable bloatware. On my T-Mobile Galaxy S6 Edge you will find T-Mobile My Account, Device Unlock, Mobile Hotspot, T-Mobile Name ID, T-Mobile TV, Visual Voicemail, Amazon store app, and Lookout. That’s not too bad for a US carrier and most of these can be hidden and disabled, but not uninstalled as some were lead to believe.
Similar to what HTC has in Sense 7, Samsung includes the ability to theme your phone on a much more limited basis. You can select themes in the theme store and apply the wallpaper, icons, and sounds of that theme. You cannot customize anything in the theme, but the Avengers theme has been fun to use the last few days.
Samsung Pay has the potential to work just about everywhere in the US so I look forward to its release. As of now, I am using Google Wallet for my wireless payments.

Daily usage experiences

While I enjoy using my iPhone 6 Plus, it is definitely a large phone and doesn’t fit in my pockets very easily. The Galaxy S6 Edge slips in easily and this kind of convenience is very appealing to me.
As I mentioned in the hardware section, I had some initial battery challenges that seemed to be primarily attributed to 3rd party apps. If I am out and about from 5 am to 10 pm, the Galaxy S6 Edge won’t make it through with regular usage. I can top it off with a portable battery pack, reduce my usage, or turn on power saving to get me through. Unlike a few other phones I have, battery life is something I have to think about with the S6 Edge.
It was a real joy to use the Galaxy S6 Edge as my primary camera and count on it taking excellent photos and video. When I showed these to family and friends they were immediately impressed and couldn’t believe it was an Android smartphone.
The Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge is thin, light, and gorgeous. I enjoy carrying it around and don’t mind the ridge on either side of the curved glass. Some may find it a bit uncomfortable, but the design fascinates me personally.

Pricing, availability, and conclusions

The Galaxy S6 Edge was available early from T-Mobile and should be available starting this week on all major US wireless carriers. Subsidized pricing with a two year contract will cost you $299.99 to $499.99.
When I need to go out with just a single phone in hand, my SIM goes into the Apple iPhone 6 Plus. With the release of the HTC One M9 and Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge, my goal was to see if either phone could serve in this role since I find Android better meets my needs.
Some reasons I prefer Android include the ability to plug in a microUSB to USB stick to transfer files to and from a PC, Google Now cards, ability to much more easily attach files to emails, IR functionality so I can control my TV, and standard microUSB charging that I have in the office, in the car, and at home.
I have tried to just carry an Android phone as my only phone, but the camera always let me down. My Xperia Z3 was the closest to perfection, but the camera does not perform consistently and Sony has some real issues with voice calling quality and text message reliability.

Thankfully, the Galaxy S6 Edge has a camera I think performs better than the iPhone 6 while also offering fast and wireless charging, reliable fingerprint security, and much more. The battery life is about as good as the iPhone 6 and Moto X, but not as great as the iPhone 6 Plus, BlackBerry Passport, or Sony Xperia Z3. With fast charging and upcoming Mophie battery pack the trade-off is one I am willing to make

Summary:A new school for startup-style thinking and innovation is being launched by Melbourne co-working space Queens Collective in a bid to help large companies retain their competitive edge by behaving like a startup.

Melbourne-based co-working space Queens Collective is launching a new school for innovation, dubbed Collective Campus, which is aimed at giving large companies tips from the startup sector.

The aim of the new program, which will provide a series of initial workshops in areas such as the lean startup business development method, design thinking, and agile software development, is to help large companies retain their competitive edge by behaving like startups.
“We want to help more mature companies innovate like startups,” said Hotdesk founder and Collective Campus co-founder Steve Glaveski. “Companies like Netflix and Uber are disrupting powerful incumbents through business model innovations that break new ground and redefine entire markets.
“Large companies tend to concentrate on an established, repeatable business model. The traditional thinking and practice that underpins this focus does not support the discovery of new business models and markets, which is key to disruptive innovation,” he said.
Glaveski draws upon the case of iconic film giant Kodak to highlight the necessity for large enterprises, no matter how established, to remain on the front foot when it comes to innovation in order to avoid being “disrupted” by new technology and more agile and often much smaller companies. In 2012, 126-year-old imaging solutions company Eastman Kodak filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy after its core business offering, analogue imaging products such as film and print paper, was displaced by burgeoning digital imaging technology.
The irony behind the company’s demise was that Kodak itself had invented the core technology behind the digital imaging market, which began to chew into its legacy business in the late 1990s.
In fact, in a bid to raise funds after filing for Chapter 11 bankruptcy, Kodak ended up selling more than 1,000 of its patents to Apple, Google, Microsoft, and other companies that had been using its technology for years via licencing deals, effectively deeming its traditional business model obsolete.
Glaveski wants to help large companies in Australia avoid the same pitfalls that Kodak stumbled into while clinging onto its traditional business model and product portfolio to the detriment of its own evolution in the increasingly fast-moving technology industry.

“That same story is told across many different industries, where large companies refuse to invest in disruptive innovations because the current market for those innovations are small, their current customers have no need for them, therefore they’re ignored until they become good enough for the mainstream, and at that point the cost structure of the incumbent is far too high to play at that disruptive innovation level, and then eventually get gobbled up,” Glaveski told ZDNet.
While some of Australia’s largest home-grown companies such as Telstra have been working to build more innovation into their businesses and adopt a startup-inspired agile approach to aspects of an otherwise unwieldy business structure, Glaveski believes that small-scale startup-styled projects within large enterprises often result in short-term or incremental results.
Glaveski hopes that Collective Campus’ initial workshop subject areas will begin to help large companies move beyond incremental developments by taking up startup teachings on a company-wide basis.
According to Glaveski, these initial subject areas were developed after lengthy consultation with representatives from the local startup community. They will be joined by additional topics, with further industry consultation expected to throw up other relevant areas of learning.
“I imagine that over the next six months to 12 months, our product will evolve, and I think that’s what we’re about,” he said. “We’re all about emergent strategy.”
MILAN (AP) — Islamic extremists suspected in a bomb attack in a Pakistani market that killed more than 100 people had also planned an attack against the Vatican in 2010 that was never carried out, an Italian prosecutor said Friday.
Wiretaps collected as part of the investigation gave “signals of some preparation for a possible attack” at the Vatican, prosecutor Mauro Mura told a news conference in Cagliari, Sardinia. That included the arrival in Rome of a Pakistani suicide bomber, Mura said. The alleged foiled plot, known to authorities for years, was revealed as prosecutors announced the results of a decade-long investigation into an Italy-based terror network that aimed to stop Pakistan’s actions against the Taliban. Police arrested nine suspects related to the probe Friday throughout Italy. Another nine were being sought, three of whom were believed to still be in the country.
The Pakistani eventually left Italy, Mura said, without explaining why. The Italian news agency ANSA reported that there were two suicide bombers and that they were warned off by their associates in Italy when police began executing search warrants in the wider investigation of the Italy-based Islamic terror network.
The Vatican downplayed the significance of the alleged plot.
“From what it appears, this concerns a hypothesis that dates from 2010 which didn’t occur. It has therefore no relevance today and no reason for particular concern,” said the Rev. Federico Lombardi, the Vatican spokesman.
At the time of the suspected plot to bomb the Vatican, Pope Benedict XVI was still reeling from the effects in the Muslim world of a 2006 speech in Regensburg, Germany, in which he quoted a Byzantine emperor who characterized some of the teachings of the Prophet Muhammad as “evil and inhuman,” particularly “his command to spread by the sword the faith.”
While relations with the Muslim world were eventually repaired, tensions flared again in 2011 when Cairo’s al-Azhar institute, the pre-eminent theological school of Sunni Islam, suspended interfaith talks with the Vatican after Benedict called for greater protections for Egypt’s minority Christians.
More recently, Italian officials have made clear they take seriously the threat of the Islamic State group to conquer Rome and the seat of Christianity. Security has been beefed up at the Vatican and the head of the Swiss Guards has said they are ready but that they have no information about an imminent threat.
Pope Francis himself has said he realizes he may be a target but that he fears mostly for the innocent crowds who come to see him every time he’s in public.
“We are all exposed and we are all afraid,” said the Vatican secretary of state, Pietro Parolin. “But the pope is very calm for this, it’s enough to watch him meeting people with great clarity and serenity.”
The investigation was launched in 2005, but Mura said it was slowed when news of the investigation leaked to the media, alerting the suspects that they were being watched. He also said the process of translating the wiretaps was painstaking.
Authorities said some of five of the suspects were responsible for plotting “numerous bloody acts of terrorism in Pakistan,” including the October 2009 explosion in a market in Peshawar in which more than 100 people died. That attack happened on the same day that then-Secretary of State Hillary Clinton visited the Pakistani capital, Islamabad, Mura noted.
Some of the suspects were also suspected of organizing attacks against Pakistani police and security forces that were carried out between March 2011 and November 2011, leaving five people dead, Mura said.
The terror ring also was a source of funding for terror operations in Pakistan, gathering donations from the Pakistani and Afghan community in Italy. It also illegally smuggled into Italy Pakistani and Afghani citizens who arrived by plane with false papers.
One of the suspects arrested Friday had a construction business in Sardinia that participated in work for a Group of Eight summit planned for Sardinia but that was later moved to quake-stricken Aquilia, in Abruzzo to boost reconstruction. Another was an imam in the northern province of Bergamo.
Mura also said some of the suspects had very close ties to al Qaida leader Osama bin Laden, and that wiretaps included phone calls inquiring about his health. Two were part of bin Laden’s security detail, a press release said.
Police said the aim of the terror network was to create an insurrection against the Pakistani government.

Jennifer Lynn Lopez
(born July 24, 1969), also known as J. Lo, is an American actress, author, fashion designer, dancer, producer, singer, and songwriter. She became interested in pursuing a career in the entertainment industry following a minor role in the 1986 film My Little Girl, to the dismay of herPuerto Rican parents, who believed that it was an unrealistic career route for a Hispanic. Lopez gained her first regular high-profile job as a Fly Girl dancer on In Living Color in 1991, where she remained a regular until she decided to pursue an acting career in 1993. She received her first leading role in the Selena biopic of the same name in 1997. Lopez became the first Latina actress to earn over $1 million for a role the following year, with the film Out of Sight. She ventured into the music industry in 1999 with her debut studio album, On the 6.
With the simultaneous release of her second studio album J.Lo and her filmThe Wedding Planner in 2001, Lopez became the first person to have a number one album and film in the same week. Her 2002 remix album, J to tha L–O! The Remixes, became the first in history to debut at number one on the U.S. Billboard200, while her fifth studio album, Como Ama una Mujer (2007), received the highest first-week sales for a Spanish album in the United States. With past record sales of over 60 million and a cumulative film gross of over $2 billion, Lopez is regarded as the most influential Hispanic performer in the United States, as well as its highest paid Latin entertainer. As of 2014, she has an estimated net worth of $400 million. Along with Pitbull and Claudia Leitte, she recorded “We Are One (Ole Ola)“, which served as the official song of the 2014 FIFA World Cup.
Beyond entertainment, Lopez enjoyed a highly successful business career, consisting of various clothing lines, accessories, fragrances, a production company, television shows and a charitable foundation among other business interests. Lopez’s personal relationships have attracted worldwide media attention; she has been married three times. Following the breakdown of her first marriage, Lopez dated rapper and entertainment mogul Sean Combs. Following the breakdown of her second marriage to husband Cris Judd, she dated actor Ben Affleck. Their relationship was the subject of much media interest; their planned wedding was cancelled four days before the ceremony. Lopez then wed longtime friend Marc Anthony; they separated after seven years of marriage. Lopez gave birth to their twins, Emme and Maximilian, in 2008.

Early life

Castle Hill, the neighborhood where Lopez was born and raised

Jennifer Lynn Lopez was born on July 24, 1969, in the Castle Hill neighborhood of The Bronx, New York,  to Puerto Rican parents Guadalupe Rodriguez and David Lopez. She has an older sister, Leslie, and a younger sister, Lynda, a journalist. David worked the night shift at the Guardian Insurance Company, before becoming a computer technician at the firm, while Guadalupe was a homemaker. When Lopez was born, the family was living in a small apartment. A few years later, her parents had saved up enough money to be able to purchase a two-story house, which was considered a big deal for the relatively poor family.  At the age of five, Lopez began taking singing and dancing lessons. She toured New York with her school when she was seven years old. Her parents stressed the importance of work ethic and being able to speak English. They encouraged their three daughters to put on performances at home; singing and dancing in front of each other and their friends so that they would stay “out of trouble”.  Lopez spent her entire academic career in Catholic schools, finishing at Preston High School. In school, Lopez did gymnastics, ran track on a national level and was a member of the school’s softball team. She excelled athletically rather than academically, competing in national track championships.  In 1984, at the age of fifteen, she began dating David Cruz, her first boyfriend.
While attending her final year of high school, Lopez learned about a film casting that was seeking several teenage girls for small roles. She auditioned and was cast in My Little Girl(1986), a low-budget film co-written and directed by Connie Kaiserman.  Lopez acted as Myra, a young woman at a center for troubled girls. After she finished filming her role in the film, Lopez realized that she wanted to become a “famous movie star”. To please her parents, though, she enrolled in Baruch College, only to drop out after one semester. She told her parents her dream of becoming a movie star, but they insisted that it was a “really stupid” idea and that “no Latinos did that”. The differences in opinions led Lopez to move out of their family home and into an apartment in Manhattan. During this period, Lopez performed in regional productions of the musicals: Jesus Christ Superstar and Oklahoma. From there, she was hired for the chorus in a Golden Musicals of Broadway, which toured Europe for five months. She was unhappy with the role, as she was the only member of the chorus to not have a solo. She later got a job on the show Synchronicity in Japan, where she acted as a dancer, singer and a choreographer.

Career

1991–96: In Living Color and early film career

Lopez was selected as a backup dancer for the New Kids on the Block in 1991 and performed with them during their performance of “Games” at the 8th Annual American Music Awards. Shortly after, Lopez gained her first regular high-profile job as a Fly Girldancer on the television program In Living Color. She applied for the job after one of the cast members was unavailable to continue with the show. Out of 2,000 applicants, Lopez made it to the finals. She was the runner-up, but eventually received the role when the winner was unable to accept the job. She moved with Cruz to Los Angeles to film the series and remained a regular cast member until 1993 when she decided to pursue a full-time acting career. Prior to leaving the show, Lopez briefly worked as a backup dancer for American recording artist Janet Jackson.  Lopez was set to tour with Jackson on herJanet World Tour in late 1993, but backed out as she wanted to do her “own thing.”
Lopez received her first professional acting gig in the direct-to-video drama film Lost in the Wild (1993), co-starring alongside Lindsay Wagner and Robert Loggia.  Later in 1993 Lopez signed a deal with CBS to co-star in the television series Second Chances. The show was cancelled after airing only six episodes, due to its set being destroyed by the 1994 Northridge earthquake.  A spin-off of the series, titled Hotel Malibu was launched later that same year. It also ran for only a brief period of time and, like Second Chances, received negative reviews.  Lopez received her first major big-screen role in Gregory Nava‘s 1995 drama My Family, portraying Young Maria.  The film, which stars Esai MoralesJimmy Smits, and Edward James Olmos, was critically acclaimed.  Although her role was uncredited, Lopez received an Independent Spirit Award for Best Supporting Female nomination for her performance.  In November 1995, Lopez starred in Money Train alongside Wesley Snipes and Woody Harrelson, as New York City transit cops. The film faced negative reviews and is considered to be a box office bomb; with a budget of $68 million, the film grossed a total of $77 million worldwide.  In August 1996, Lopez had a supporting role in the comedy Jack.  With a budget of $45 million, the film grossed a total of $59 domestically.  The film received generally negative reviews.

1997–99: Breakthrough with Selena and On the 6

Lopez earned widespread acclaim for her role as Selena in the 1997 biopic film Selena.

In February 1997, Lopez starred alongside Jack Nicholson and Stephen Dorff in the neo-noir thrillerBlood and Wine.  It was a commercial failure; the $26 million production budget was matched with a domestic gross of $1 million at the box office. Despite this, the film received generally positive reviews from critics.  Lopez starred as the title role of the Selena biopic of the same name in March.  Despite having previously worked with the film’s director on My Family, Lopez was subjected to an intense auditioning process before she was cast in the film.  With a production budget of $20 million, the film grossed a total of $35 million domestically. Kenneth Turan of theLos Angeles Times stated that even in the “forgettable films”Money Train, and Jack, Lopez’s “presence and ability made her seem just one role away from stardom” and with Selena she’s “seized the opportunity and turned in an incandescent presentation that is especially strong during the film’s numerous musical numbers”. He concluded by calling the film not just a celebration of Selena’s life, but also of the actress who portrayed her.  After filming Selena, Lopez was “really feeling [her] Latin roots” and cut a demo in Spanish.  Lopez’s manager then sent the song, titled “Vivir Sin Ti” (Living without You), to Sony Music Entertainment‘s Work Group, who showed an interest in signing Lopez. Tommy Mottola, the head of the label suggested to her that she sing in English instead.
In April, Lopez starred in the horror film Anaconda alongside Ice Cube and Jon Voight. With a production budget of $45 million, the film grossed a total of $137 million worldwide, becoming a commercial success.  Lopez starred alongside Sean Penn and Billy Bob Thornton in the crime film U Turn in October. The film, which is based on the novel Stray Dogs by John Ridley, received generally positive reception from critics.  In June, Lopez starred opposite George Clooney in Out of SightSteven Soderbergh‘s adaptation of Elmore Leonard‘s novel of the same name (1996). Cast as a deputy federal marshal who falls for a charming criminal, Lopez won rave reviews for her performance and became the first Latina actress to earn over $1 million for a role.  With a production budget of $48 million, the film grossed a total of $78 million worldwide, becoming a moderate commercial success.  Lopez provided the voice of Azteca in the computer-animated film Antz in October.  With a production budget of $105 million, the film grossed a total of $172 million worldwide.
Lopez’s debut single, “If You Had My Love“, was released in May 1999, as she began to

ready her first album.  Lopez became the first artist to top the Billboard Hot 100 with their debut single since Britney Spears did so with her single, “…Baby One More Time“, four months prior.  During production of her debut album On the 6, Lopez was aware that she received her recording contract on the premise of her looks and having an already established name in the entertainment industry, and wanted to prove she had musical talent.  Prior to the debut of her music, critics wondered why she would take the risk of launching a music career. It was noted that: “If the album was a flop, not only would it embarrass Lopez, but it might even damage her career.” Waiting for Tonight“, the third single from On the 6, is widely considered to be Lopez’s best song. Lopez’s musical success came as a surprise to critics; its launch made the “popular actor even more popular”. Both the music industry and the public became intrigued by “this woman who seemed to have so many different talents”.  By the end of 1999, Lopez successfully converted herself from a film star to a pop star.  She joined a select few in achieving this feat, becoming the first since Vanessa Williams (1992) and Martika (1989).

2000–02: Continued film success, J.Lo and This Is Me… Then

On February 23, 2000, Lopez, in the accompaniment of then-boyfriend Sean Combs, wore a plunging exotic green Versace silk chiffon dress on the red carpet of the 42nd Annual Grammy Awards. The dress “had a low-cut neck that extended several inches below her navel, where it was loosely fastened with a sparkly brooch and then opened out again,” exposing her midriff and then as cut along the front of the legs like a bath robe.  The dress generated controversy and media attention, with images of Lopez in the dress being downloaded from the Grammy website over half a million times 24 hours after the event.  Lopez was surprised by the enormous media coverage, declaring that she had no idea “it was going to become such a big deal”.  Lopez returned to the big-screen in August, starring in the psychological thriller The Cell opposite Vincent D’Onofrio.  With a production budget of $33 million, the film grossed a total of $104 million worldwide. The film received mixed reviews from critics, who stated that although it offers “disturbing, stunning eye candy”, it is “undermined by a weak and shallow plotline that offers nothing new”.
During the process of creating her second album, Lopez decided to tweak her image as she began to develop into a sex symbol. She changed her stage name to J.Lo, a nickname she was given by her fans.  She subsequently named the album J.Lo, which was released on January 23, 2001. The record was a commercial success, debuting at number one on the United States Billboard 200. This exact week, her romantic comedy film The Wedding Planner in which she starred opposite Matthew McConaughey, opened atop the box office. This made her the first entertainer to have a number one film and album simultaneously.  The album initially spawned the hit singles “Love Don’t Cost a Thing” and “Play“. April 2001 saw the public launch of J.Lo by Jennifer Lopez, her own clothing and accessory company which specialized in clothing females of all shapes.  That May, Lopez starred in the romantic drama film Angel Eyes, which performed disappointingly at the box office and generated mixed reviews.  In July, an urban oriented “Murder remix” of the track “I’m Real” featuring Ja Rule was released. The remix reached number one on theBillboard Hot 100.  Following the September 11 attacks, Lopez was heavily involved in charitable activities. Joining various other artists, she was featured on charitable singles such as “What’s Going On” and “El Ultimo Adios (The Last Goodbye)” which benefited people affected by the tragedy.
To enhance Lopez’s success in the urban market, promotion of J.Lo ended and a remix album titled J to tha L–O! The Remixes was released on February 5, 2002.  Its lead single was “Ain’t It Funny (Murder Remix)“, which also featured Ja Rule, which reached number one in the United States. The remix album debuted at the summit of the Billboard200, becoming the first to do so.  It is the third highest selling remix album in history, with sales of one and a half million in the United States.  J to tha L–O! The Remixesspawned two other singles, “I’m Gonna Be Alright” and “Alive“, a ballad co-written by her husband at the time, Cris Judd. April 2002 saw Lopez open her restaurant, Madrè’s.
In May 2002, Lopez starred in the thriller film Enough as a woman named Slim who flees her home after being abused by her husband. The film grossed a modest $52 million at the box office,  though garnered lukewarm reviews, despite being dubbed a “kick-butt, female empowerment” movie.  Filming Enough required an overworked Lopez to practice Krav Maga, and despite being at the height of her fame at the time, she suffered anervous breakdown while on set. Lopez recalled years later feeling “sick and weird”, refusing therapeutic help or medication. She confessed, “I was like – I don’t want to move, I don’t want to talk, I don’t want to do anything.”  In September, Lopez released her first fragrance, Glow by JLo. It performed strongly despite predictions that it would fail, and became America’s top-selling fragrance.
The month of her engagement to actor Ben Affleck saw the release of her third studio album, This Is Me… Then, which was dedicated to him. It spawned the internationally successful singles “Jenny from the Block” and “All I Have”. The album itself, which featured multiple love songs,  performed strongly, having sold over two and a half million copies in the United States. December 2002 saw Lopez star opposite Ralph Fiennes in the romantic comedy film Maid in Manhattan. She played Marisa Ventura, a struggling single mother who lives in the Bronx and makes her living cleaning rooms in a super-luxurious Manhattan hotel. Marisa gets mistaken for a socialite by a princely politician, who she falls in love with. With a production budget of $55 million, the film grossed $155 million at the box office worldwide. The New York Times compared the film’s storyline to her song “Jenny from the Block”.

2003–05: Film disappointments and Rebirth

In August 2003, Lopez starred opposite Affleck in the romantic comedy Gigli. With a production budget of $54 million, the film grossed a total of $7 million worldwide, becoming a box office bomb.  The film received universally negative reviews from film critics, who deemed it to be “bizarre and clumsily plotted”. Gilgi is often considered to beone of the worst films of all time.

Lopez in 2004

In March 2004, Lopez had a minor role in the filmJersey Girl, alongside Affleck. Her character, Gertrude Steiney, dies during childbirth within the first 15 minutes of the film. From the intense media scrutiny following the couple’s break-up, it was noted that “they may need to put Lopez in a coffin on the poster if they want anyone to come”. With a production budget of $35 million, the film was a commercial failure, earning a total of $36 million at the box office.  The film, however, received generally positive reviews from critics, despite being “full of cloyingly sentimental cliches”.   In October, Lopez co-starred alongside Richard Gerein the drama Shall We Dance?, a re-make of the1996 Japanese film of the same title. With a production budget of $50 million, the film grossed a total of $170 million worldwide.  It received generally positive reviews from critics, although it was noted that it “loses the nuances of the original”, with the loss of cultural context and the addition of high-profile celebrities.
In 2004, during low-key visits to the Children’s Hospital Los Angeles, which Lopez is an avid support of, she befriended eleven-year-old cancer patient Paige Patterson. Patterson attended the inaugural Noche de Niños gala for the hospital in which Lopez was presented with an award, however the morning after became even more sick and died in November 2004. Lopez has stated that Patterson made her realize why her charity work is important.  Lopez dedicated Rebirth, her fourth studio album, to Patterson.  According to Lopez, Rebirth“came about because I was on such a roller-coaster ride, that was my career from my first album to my last album, and I did a bunch of movie projects in between. I finally took some time just for myself, and [when] I came back, this was the first project I did. I felt like it was a new beginning for me, like I was, in a way, reborn. I was where I was when I made my first album”.  Tracy Hopkins of NBC’s Today Music noted that after “fawning” over Affleck on This Is Me… Then“, Lopez “wisely keeps her love life out of the spotlight” on Rebirth and only references her relationship with Anthony on a few tracks.
In May, Lopez starred alongside Jane Fonda in the romantic comedy Monster-in-Law. She received $15 million for her role as Charlie, an artist who is pitted against her fiance’s mother when she does not accept her as being the right woman for her son. With a production budget of $43 million, the film grossed a total of $155 million worldwide. The film received generally negative reviews from film critics, who stated although Fonda “steals the show” in her “return to the screen”, the “tired” script and “flimsy performances” make Monster-in-Law fall “flat”.  In August, Lopez starred alongside Robert Redford andMorgan Freeman in An Unfinished Life, a drama film based on the novel of the same name. The film was a commercial failure, only grossing $18 million worldwide with its production budget of $30 million.

2006–09: Como Ama una Mujer and Brave

Bordertown, a film based on the Female homicides in Ciudad Juárez, made its premiere at the Cannes Film Festival on May 18, 2006. Lopez, who also acts as the film’s producer, stars as Lauren Adrian, an American news reporter for the Chicago Sentinel who wants to be assigned to the Iraq front-lines to cover the war.  The film received a limited releasein theaters throughout Europe in 2007 and a direct-to-video release in many other countries in 2008, including the United States. Bordertown was a commercial failure, grossing a total of $8 million worldwide, with its $21 million production budget. DanceLife, a reality series following the lives of seven dancers trying to break into the world of professional dance, aired on MTV from January 15 to March 5, 2007. Lopez produced, created and was featured in the show.  According to the album’s co-producer Estéfano, Lopez’s fifth studio album Como Ama una Mujer would “prove critics wrong” with its “big songs that require a voice”; referring to the criticism of Lopez having a “limited” vocal tone. The album received the highest first-week sales in the United States for a Spanish album and the highest digital sales.
In September 2007, Lopez starred in the biographical filmEl Cantante, which is based on the life of the late salsa singer Héctor Lavoe. In the film, Lavoe is portrayed by then-husband Marc Anthony while Lopez plays Lavoe’s wife Puchi.  The film initially debuted at the Toronto International Film Festival on September 12, 2006, and received mixed reviews from critics.  In an interview with Latina magazine, Lopez revealed that she felt her performance in the film El Cantante, should have earned her an Oscar. “I feel like I had that [Oscar worthy role] in ‘El Cantante,’ but I don’t think the academy members saw it”.  Lopez and Anthony also launched their co-headlining North American concert touron September 28. The tour grossed an estimated $10 million, with one dollar from each ticket sold being donated to Run for Something Better—a charitable organization supporting physical fitness programs for children.
Lopez’s sixth studio album Brave, released in October, was her lowest-charting album worldwide.  The album produced two singles, “Do It Well” and “Hold It Don’t Drop It“. The first peaked at number 31 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart, while the latter failed to make any significant impact on the charts. A five-part miniseriesJennifer Lopez Presents: Como Ama una Mujer, based on the lyrics of Como Ama una Mujer aired on Univision from October 30 to November 27, 2007. In late 2009, Lopez released two songs for her seventh studio album, Love? (“Louboutins” and “Fresh Out of the Oven”); however, the songs failed to make an appearance on the Billboard charts which led to her departure from Epic Records.

2010–12: Career rejuvenation and American Idol

Lopez parted ways with Epic Records in February 2010, citing that she had fulfilled her contractual obligations and now wished to release her seventh studio album Love? under a new label.  Her departure from the label temporarily halted production on the album, which commenced in 2009. Upon signing a new contract with Island Records, recording resumed on the album.  The New York Daily News revealed that Lopez would be taking some of the records recorded under Sony Music Entertainment to her new label so that they could be included on the album.  In April, Lopez starred in the romantic comedyThe Back-up Plan, her first theatrical role in three years.  Having grossed a modest $77 million worldwide, the film received lukewarm critical reviews for “unrelatable characters” and a “predictable plot”, although Lopez’s acting was praised.  In June, following the departure of Ellen DeGeneres from American Idol, it was reported that Lopez was in talks to join season ten’s judging panel.  During this same time, Lopez and Anthony were being considered for a role on The X Factor for their appeal to Latin and International markets.  It was officially announced in September that Lopez would be joining the tenth season of American Idol. MTV stated that the deal was “mutually beneficial to all those involved”, while CNN reported that Lopez was viewing it as a decision to revive her career, while American Idol producers believed that Lopez and Steven Tyler‘s appointments would strengthen viewing figures.  In October, Lopez released her fourteenth fragrance, Love and Glamour. The perfume was inspired by Lopez’s forthcoming “return to the spotlight”.
In January 2012, Lopez returned as judge on the eleventh season of American Idol, earning a reported $20 million.  Later that same month, a new talent show, ¡Q’Viva! The Chosen, created by Simon Fuller premiered on Univision and was a hit for the channel.  It followed Lopez, Anthony and director-choeographer Jamie King as they travelled across 21 countries in Latin America to find new talent for a Las Vegas show. On May 18, Lopez returned to the big screen starring alongside an ensemble cast consisting of Cameron DiazElizabeth BanksMatthew Morrison and Dennis Quaid in the film What to Expect When You’re Expecting.  Based on the novel of the same name, Lopez plays Holly, a woman who adopts a baby from abroad with her husband after difficulty conceiving. The film was a moderate success at the box office with a total gross of $84 million, although it received negative reviews.  In late May, Lopez released her fragrance Glowing by JLo, which she described as an “evolution” of Glow by JLo. L’Oreal Paris named Lopez their new Global Ambassador and the face of their brands, including EverPure hair care, Preference hair color and Youth Code skin care. Her EverSleek hair care ads made their debut in early 2011, to coincide with the release of Love? and her debut as a judge on American Idol.  To further promote her comeback, in February,Venus chose Lopez as their new Global Ambassador.  Lopez’s comeback single “On the Floor” was released later that same month. The song topped the charts across the globe, becoming one of the most successful singles of the year.  The song also became her highest charting single commercially as a lead artist, as well as her most successful airplay hit on contemporary hit radio, since “Jenny from the Block”. Love?, which was released in May, was a moderate commercial success, and was viewed as a humble comeback from Lopez, as many had considered her recording career over.  Lopez launched her next fragrance Love and Light in July, exclusively on HSN. 51,000 bottles of the fragrance were sold at its premiere, becoming Lopez’s most successful fragrance launch to date, making over $2.9 million.  In September, Lopez launched the Jennifer Lopez Collection, a clothing and accessories line for Kohl’s with Tommy Hilfiger.  In addition to the clothing line, she also launched the Jennifer Lopez Home Collection, featuring bedding, towels and luggage. Later that same month Fiat, an Italian automobile manufacturer, enlisted Lopez to promote their products, including the 2012 Fiat 500 Cabrio. Olivier Francois, the Chrysler chief marketing officer, stated that she “fits perfectly with the brand”.

Lopez performing during her Dance Again World Tour, June 2012.

Lopez launched the Dance Again World Tour, her first headlining concert tour, on June 14. It was a lucrative, grossing over $1 million per show.  On July 12, Lopez launched Teeology, a luxury T-shirt e-commerce.  Lopez voiced Shira, a saber tooth tiger, in the animated film, Ice Age: Continental Drift, the fourth film in the Ice Agefranchise. The film debuted at number one at the US box office, having grossed $46 million in its opening weekend, becoming Lopez’s highest opening weekend figure.  With a $95 million production budget, the film has since grossed $877 million worldwide.
Lopez’s first greatest hits album, Dance Again… the Hits, was released on July 24, 2012 in the United States.  It was released by Epic Records, as Lopez owed them one final album to end her contract, despite previously announcing that she had fulfilled her contract with the label.  Lopez, who was going through a divorce with Anthony and the “breakup of a family”, felt as if the album’s sole single, “Dance Again“, had come to her at the “perfect moment”. “Dance Again” and “Goin’ In“, a single from the soundtrack of the dance film Step Up Revolution, both reached the top of the Billboard Hot Dance Club Songs, giving Lopez her twelfth and thirteenth number one on that chart, respectively. Additionally, “Goin’ In” became her tenth consecutive number one on the chart, tying Katy Perry for having the most consecutive numbers ones on the chart. nuvoTV announced in September its premier partnership with Lopez, that will see her work on the creative side of the network, managing marketing and program production with her production company, Nuyorican Productions, as well as periodically appearing in network programming.  In December, Lopez held a charity drive that would affect her three favorite charities: the Gloria Wise Boys and Girls Club, the Children’s Hospital of Los Angeles as well as the American Red Cross which would mainly benefit victims of Hurricane Sandy which devastated parts of her home town, New York City.

2013–present: A.K.A. and other projects

In January 2013, Lopez starred alongside Jason Statham in the crime thriller Parker, in which she played Leslie. Her performance earned positive reviews, with Chicago Tribunecommending the role for giving Lopez “an opportunity to be dramatic, romantic, funny, depressed, euphoric and violent. The audience stays with her all the way”. It under-performed at the box office, however.  The following month, she gained widespread notoriety for wearing a daring black dress at the Grammy Awards which revealed her entire right leg; despite a conservative dress code which had been issued to celebrities in attendance.  In May, Lopez was announced as the chief creative officer of nuvoTV. In addition, she founded the mobile phone retail brand Viva  Móvil, which is catered specifically for Latinos. In these media ventures, Lopez hoped to empower the Latin community, stating that: “We’re realizing our power. We’re realizing that we matter here. You know, we’re not just, you know, the guys working behind the scenes in the kitchens and as a plumber.”  She began politically lobbying for more Hispanic diversity on television; “There’s a big revolution going on, it’s like a media and cultural revolution of Latinos here in the United States. We’re realizing our power. We’re realizing that we matter here.”
Inspired by her gay aunt who had died, Lopez signed on as executive producer of the television series The Fosters, which is about a same sex couple raising a family. The show premiered on ABC Family on June 3, 2013, and has since been a ratings success for the network.  She was awarded the Ally for Equality award presented by the Human Rights Campaign.  Later that June, Lopez performed at the birthday of TurkmenistanPresident Gurbanguly Berdymukhamedov.  Doing so, she garnered widespread backlash for performing for the leader of a “repressive, authoritarian regime”.  Her publicist released an apology.  Lopez returned as judge on American Idol for its thirteenth season for a reported salary of $17.5 million. She was ranked as the fifth highest-paid woman in music for 2013, having earned $45 million.  After the conclusion of her Dance Again World Tour, Lopez began recording her eighth studio album, A.K.A., inspired by her travels.  It was released in June 2014 through Capitol Records, experiencing lackluster sales.  The album produced three singles: “I Luh Ya Papi” which features French Montana, “First Love“, and “Booty“, featuring Pitbull or rapper Iggy Azalea. “Booty” reached the top twenty in the United States.  In April, the official song for the 2014 FIFA World Cup performed by Pitbull, Lopez and Brazilian recording artist Claudia Leitte, “We Are One (Ole Ola)“, was released. She was ranked as the sixth highest-paid woman in music for the year, earning $37 million.
January 2015 saw the release of The Boy Next Door, an erotic thriller which Lopez both co-produced and starred in as a high school teacher who becomes involved with a student, which eventually leads to his dangerous obsession with her. The film received negative reviews from critics.  Despite this, it became her most successful opening at the box office for a live action film since Monster-in-Law.  The following month, she unveiled her next fragrance, JLuxe.  In 2015, Lopez will also star in the independent film Lila & Eve (alongside Viola Davis),  and the animated feature Home (alongside Steve Martin,Jim Parsons, and Rihanna)  for which she contributed the single “Feel the Light” to the film’s official soundtrack.  She will also venture into television. NBC has ordered a 13-episode television drama, in which she will executive produce and star. In the series, titledShades of Blue, expected to air in the 2015–16 television season, she will portray a single mother and police detective who goes undercover for the FBI to investigate her own squad.Ryan Seacrest will also produce the series.  Lopez has revealed plans to release a Christmas album followed by a second Spanish-language album.

Personal life

Anthony and Lopez, 2006

Lopez’s personal life has attracted widespread media attention.  From February 22, 1997 to January 1998, she was married to Cuban waiter Ojani Noa.  Since their brief marriage, Lopez has endured legal troubles regarding Noa. She sued to prevent him from publishing a book about their marriage in April 2006, contending that it violated their confidentiality agreement.  The following year, a court-appointed arbitrator issued a permanent injunction forbidding Noa from “criticizing, denigrating, casting in a negative light or otherwise disparaging” Lopez. She was awarded $545,000 in compensatory damages and Noa was ordered to hand over all copies of materials related to the book to Lopez or her attorney.  A lawsuit regarding a compromising private honeymoon video in Noa’s possession is presently running.
While working on her first album On the 6, Lopez began dating record producer and rapperSean Combs. On December 27, 1999, the couple were arrested along with two others in connection with a shooting outside the Times Square Club in New York. They were charged with criminal possession of a weapon as well as stolen property. Lopez was soon exonerated, having had nothing to do with the crime.  However, Combs was charged and indicted by a Manhattan grand jury.  After leaving Combs, Lopez developed a relationship with former back-up dancer Cris Judd, whom she was married to from September 29, 2001 to June 2002. Following her second divorce, she commenced a high-profile relationship with actor and director Ben Affleck, whom she became engaged to in November 2002.  The media began to refer to them as “Bennifer” and they became a prominent supercouple in the media and popular culture. Bennifer became a popular term, which was eventually entered into urban dictionaries and neologismdictionaries as notable,  as the name blend started the trend of other celebrity couples being referred to by the combination of their first names.  The couple postponed their nuptials indefinitely a day prior to the planned ceremony in September 2003, citing the media’s interference with the event as the reason.
Following her break-up with Affleck in January 2004, Lopez began dating long-time friendMarc Anthony (born as Marco Antonio Muñiz). The couple wed that June,  and lived in Brookville, New York. Two men attempted to ransom a private wedding video which was stolen from the couple for one million dollars; however they were arraigned in Manhattan Criminal Court on charges of conspiracy, attempted grand larceny and possession of stolen property.  On November 7, 2007, during the final night of their co-headlining tour, Lopez and Anthony officially confirmed that they were expecting their first child.  The announcement ended months of speculation over the pregnancy. Her father confirmed that the couple were expecting twins, revealing that it runs in the family: “My sister also had twins, so it’s a hereditary thing”.
Lopez gave birth to a son, Maximilian David and a daughter, Emme Maribel, in Long Island, New York on February 22, 2008. The twins were introduced in the March 11, 2008 issue of People, for which the magazine paid a reported $6 million — the photographs of the twins became the most expensive celebrity picture ever taken at the time.  Three years later in July 2011, the couple announced their split, with Anthony filing for divorce in April 2012.  The divorce was finalized in June 2014.  From October 2011 to June 2014, Lopez dated her former back-up dancer Casper Smart.  On December 31, 2014 she legally changed her name back to Jennifer Lopez, dropping Anthony’s real Muniz last name.  Lopez has stated, “I am a non-traditional family. Me being a single mom, their dad doesn’t live at home with them. They have three stepbrothers (sic)^ from two other mothers… that’s not traditional”.

Artistry

Musical style

Over the course of her career, Lopez’s music has covered a wide range of genres including Latin pop, dance, R&B, hip hop, rock, funk, house and salsa. According to author Ed Morales, her music explores both the “romantic innocence of Latin music” and hip hop.
While heavily influenced by Latin musical styles ranging from salsa to bachata, it was the 1979 hip hop song “Rapper’s Delight” by hip hop trio The Sugarhill Gang that inspired her career. On her first album On the 6 (1999), Lopez fused Latin music together with the hip hop sound she loved, which she described as being Latin soul.
Much of her early music was centered around dance, funk, urban and Latin-influenced music. With her second album J.Lo (2001), Lopez wrote more personal songs, while retaining the same sound as her first.  Empowerment and sex are among the album’s themes.  A departure from her previous albums, This Is Me… Then (2002) evokes 1970s soul music, with Lopez stating that: “This record has a little bit of that nostalgia in it”, while its lyrical content was influenced by her relationship with Ben Affleck. This is most evident within the song “Dear Ben”. Rebirth (2005) explored more of a pop rock and funk sound, with a strong utilization of percussion and horns. Como Ama una Mujer (2007), her first full Spanish-language album, includes introspective lyrics about love, heartache and self-loathing. It has a more softer sound than her previous works. Brave (2007) and Love? (2011) are rooted more in a dance music direction. Songs from Love? such as “Until It Beats No More” and “One Love” are also deeply personal songs. Lopez describes her music as autobiographical.
Lopez has been influenced by artists such as Tina Turner, James Brown, Michael Jackson,Madonna and Barbra Streisand. Critics have considered Lopez’s soubrettevocal type to be limited,  and obscured by the production of her music, while remaining “radio-friendly”. Rolling Stone observed: “Instead of strained vocal pyrotechnics, Lopez sticks to the understated R&B murmur of a round-the-way superstar who doesn’t need to belt because she knows you’re already paying attention […] She makes a little va-va and a whole lot of voom go a long way.”  Meanwhile, AllMusic‘s Stephen Thomas Erlewine called her voice “slight” and wrote: “Lopez was never, ever about singing; she was about style, particularly the kind that passes for fashionable at glitzy high-rise discos.” Entertainment Weekly criticized her vocal performance for lacking the trademark “husky-voiced voluptuousness” she has in her films. The Baltimore Sunregards Lopez as having a “breathy” stylistic range, but lacking personality.

Dance and stage

Lopez has felt an emotional connection to dance since her childhood. Growing up, she specialized in ballet, jazz and flamenco dance genres.  Her career commenced on the variety television sketch comedy series In Living Color, where she was a part of an ethnically diverse dance group labeled The Fly Girls.  Lopez briefly served as a back-up dancer to recording artist Janet Jackson, who she claimed to have a considerable influence over her choreography. After beginning her own recording career, Lopez’s provocatively choreographed debut music video for “If You Had My Love” allowed her to become a dominant figure on MTV Networks worldwide.  Since, Lopez has become well known for her body-emphasizing music videos such as “Waiting for Tonight“, “I’m Glad“, “Dance Again” and “Booty” among others, some of which have been the subject of controversy and scrutiny.  For the film Shall We Dance? (2004), Lopez learned a new genre of dance: ballroom.  Lopez often includes dance routines in her music videos.
Author Priscilla Peña Ovalle stated in Dance and the Hollywood Latina: Race, Sex and Stardom (2011) that Lopez was one of the Latin female stars who “used dance to gain agency as working performers with mainstream careers, yet many of their roles paradoxically racialized and sexualized their bodies”.  Troy Patterson of Entertainment Weekly also observed that she used her body for emphasis on stage, “She turned herself out as the fly girl hyperversion of postfeminist power, flaunting her control by toying with the threat of excess. In consequence, her star went supernova.”  Lopez and fellow entertainer Shakira are known for their signature moves which include “clock-wise pivoting with salsa hip circles and sequential torso undulations”.  Lopez is recognized for energetic and provocative stage performances, which have at times received scrutiny. She often includes costumes such as bodysuits as part of her performance.  While being noted to lip sync in the early stages of career, Lopez’s Dance Again World Tour was praised for showcasing live vocals and choreography synchronously.  In May 2013, Lopez’s performance on the finale of the television series Britain’s Got Talent was deemed inappropriate for family-friendly television, and drew viewer complaints to Ofcom.

Public image

Speaking of Lopez’s image, Andrew Barker of Varietyobserved: “Despite a carefully cultivated image as an imperious pop empress in ludicrously expensive outfits, her signature hits bear the titles “I’m Real” and “Jenny From the Block”. She managed the perilous transition from actress to music star without ever seeming to pick either as a primary gig. She established herself as an oft-provocative sex symbol while her demeanor made it abundantly clear that she’s not asking you to come hither.”  In 2002, Lynette Holloway of The New York Times described Lopez as overexposed. She wrote: “Forgive yourself if you are seeing Jennifer Lopez in your sleep. She is everywhere.” Holloway noted her image to be “a dash of ghetto fabulousness” and “middle-class respectability” for mass appeal. Lopez is considered an icon of popular culture. Television presenter Ray Martin describes her as a “showbiz phenomenon”.  Lopez has developed an image as a sex symbol and “one of the most desirable women on the planet”.  She is well known for her curvaceous figure,  which was the inspiration for Sir Mix-a-Lot‘s 1992 hit “Baby Got Back“. Widely recognized and celebrated for her figure, she has been credited with allowing women with curvaceous figures to be accepted.
Details magazine named Lopez the “Sexiest Woman of the Year” in 1998,  and she ledFHM ’s “100 Sexiest Woman” list twice.  In 2011, she was named the “The Most Beautiful Woman” by People In 2012, Complex placed Lopez second on their list of “100 Hottest Female Singers of All Time”, writing: “Lopez has dominated the entertainment industry and become the archetypal sexy singer.”  The following year, VH1 ranked her the fourth on their list of “100 Sexiest Artists”,  while Vibe magazine named her the most “lustable” celebrity of the past twenty years.  In 2014, Lopez stated, “There’s this funny notion in America that you can’t be a mom and be sexy (…) It’s the craziest thing I’ve ever heard… The truth is that women can be sexy until the day they die.”
Lopez is a tabloid fixture and has admitted to having a “less-than-perfect” public image.  The media often draw comparisons between Lopez and actress Elizabeth Taylor, due to her numerous failed relationships.  In fact, Lopez has been dubbed a “modern-day Liz Taylor” by the media.  Lynn Hirschberg of W compared her glamorous public persona to that of Taylor.  Her style is described by Billboard ’s Lauren Savage as scantily clad.  Lopez has been criticized by the animal rights organization PETA for inclusion of fur in her fashion lines and outfits.  She has received a bed reputation as being a demanding “diva”,  though constantly refutes this.

Legacy and cultural influence

The iconic Green Versace dress Lopez wore to the 42nd Grammy Awards, on display at the Fashion Museum.

Lopez is regarded as the most influential Hispanic performer in the United States, having broken racial barriers in the entertainment industry. The Record newspaper observed that she was responsible for the introduction of a Latin presence in the film industry.  In Icons of American Popular Culture: From P.T. Barnum to Jennifer Lopez (2009), author Robert C. Cotrell describes Lopez as the Hispanic version of Oprah Winfrey, calling her a “multidimensional artist who had turned into a financial powerhouse”.  In 2012, Forbes opined that Lopez “may be the most powerful entertainer on the planet”.  Lopez is the highest-paid actress of Latin descent, as well as the wealthiest actress in Hollywood as of 2013.  Miriam Jiménez Román stated in The Afro-Latin Reader: History and Culture in the United States (2009) that “[she] was able to traverse the difficult racial boundaries”.  As a result of launching a career in music in the late 1990s, she played a part in the “Latin explosion” that was occurring in entertainment at the time.  Around this time, the emphasis on Lopez’s curvaceous figure grew; scholar Sean Redmond wrote in Stardom and Celebrity (2007) that this was a sign of her role and social power in the cultural changes occurring in the United States.  The Daily Herald described Lopez as “crossover royalty”.  In February 2007, People en Español named her the most influential Hispanic.
VH1 ranked Lopez at number 15 on a list of “200 Greatest Pop Culture Icons”, number 16 on “100 Greatest Women In Music”,  and number 21 on “50 Greatest Women of the Video Era”.  Her album J to tha L-O! The Remixes was acknowledged by the Guinness World Records as the first number one remix album in the United States.  In 2010, Lopez was honored by the World Music Awards with the Legend Award for her contribution to the arts.  Lopez’s musical comeback the following year with her single “On the Floor”—one of the best-selling singles of all time, and its music video was previously the most-watched by a female in digital history—is regarded as one of the greatest comebacks in history. Lopez remains the only entertainer to have a number one album and film simultaneously in the United States.  In 2013, Lopez was presented with the prestigious landmark 2,500th star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame for her musical contributions, with the Los Angeles Times declaring, “It’s hard to think of a more emblematic figure of multitasking modern celebrity”.

Famed for her distinctive fashion and style, Us Weekly named Lopez Style Icon of the 2000s decade.  The Green Versace “Jungle Dress” that she wore at the 42nd Annual Grammy Awards in 2000 was voted the fifth most iconic dress of all time in a poll run byThe Daily Telegraph.  The images of Lopez wearing the dress became the most popular search query of all time at that point, and subsequently led to the creation of Google‘simage search.  Her style has influenced a range of celebrities.  Her record-breaking fragrance line has become the most successful celebrity line in the world, with sales exceeding $2 billion.  Lopez has been credited as an idol or influence by a range of entertainers, including Jessica Alba, Kat DeLuna, Kerry Washington, Becky G, Britney Spears, Q’orianka Kilcher, Selena Gomez, Beyoncé Knowles, Raquel Castro, Karen Rodriguez, Layla El, Mike Doughty, Stooshe, Naya Rivera,  and Pitbull.

Some things are just better when they are perfectly timed. For example a soft boiled egg, a kiss, a surprise birthday party (if you like surprises that is), an airplane landing, a catch in the end zone, the release of a so-so movie, a witticism, a home perm (do people still give themselves home perms?), a pairs ice skating routine, a light show, and of course the ubiquitous viral image. I mean, it’s not going to be very funny if we see the shot AFTER the bucket of water has fallen on the cat’s head, it’s only funny when we see the unsuspecting cat sitting directly under the bucket that has tumbled and is suspended in midair with a stream of glistening water sliding out of it.
Here are 20 of the most perfectly-timed Images making their way around the Internet.

There’s so much to enjoy about this shot. The look of horror on the young girls’ faces juxtaposed with the look of absolute self-satisfaction on the stingray’s face. And speaking of stingray, where do you suppose his is at the moment, hmmm? I think the middle girl knows.#2

And speaking of perfectly timed, this shot is pretty incredible? Let’s start with the obvious… the guy in the green shirt who’s getting clobbered by the bat is going to have to eat soft foods for awhile. The one guy is doing a horrible job at shielding the toddler in the little pink outfit, his first reaction is to clearly make sure he is out of the way. But the funniest part of this image is the little redheaded girl at the bottom who is so completely unaware of the danger she just barely escaped.

Humpty Dumpty sat on a wall, and for the first time in his life understood why he had collected all of those Ricky Martin posters. With that question finally cleared up the next one was to tell the wife and kids the truth or play it straight for the rest of his hard-boiled life?

My earliest Google search—the earliest one Google remembers, at least—was for “tetanus shot.” My most recent was for “Tracy Morgan.” In between, there are 52,493 searches, and Google remembers them all.
This shouldn’t come as a surprise. I know Google knows essentially everything there is to know about me—and you probably do, too. With its algorithms and analytics tools, it probably knows more about me than I know about myself (statistically, I most frequently search Google at 10 AM on Tuesdays in March). But presented in its totality, it’s still a bit creepy to look at a history of every single Google search you’ve ever done.
The company has now made it possible for you to export that history and download it from its servers. In one ZIP file, you can have a timestamped history of every random bit of trivia or thought you’ve ever had; of every restaurant you’ve ever cared to Yelp; of the times you looked up whether that movie you wanted to see was actually any good.
Screengrab: Google
It has a record of the times you’ve looked up hangover cures and searched weird symptoms to perform a self diagnosis. It knows that you looked up the address to the hospital to visit a loved one and it knows that you didn’t know the address to the funeral home a week later. And it knows every time you didn’t turn on Incognito mode to search for porn.
Again, this is not necessarily surprising, but it is striking. We know Google uses its connected products and the information it has on you to help target ads and to personalize your experience, which makes using Google feel seamless. Maybe you’re fine with that—lots of people are willing to trade privacy for convenience, or for something that costs them no money. But what if you’re not?
It’s possible to change your settings so that Google doesn’t link your search history to your account. That’s a start, but Google still logs searches according to IP addresses, which can still be potentially tied back to you. You can also consider using a company like Duck Duck Go, which runs a “search engine that doesn’t track you.”
Google’s not the only one who uses your search history, of course. The record it has can be and often is subpoenaed by the government or by law enforcement.
In the first half of last year (more recent data is not yet available), the US requested user information, including search history, from Google 12,539 times. Google complied in 84 percent of cases. There are concerns that the NSA can tap the data as well. Google says that “only you can see your history,” but how true is that, really?
It has now been six months since FBI Director James Comey said that ” e

ncryption threatens to lead all of us to a very dark place.” Since then, the FBI, Department of Justice, President Obama, and NSA have all taken potshots at encryption, each of them suggesting that the risk of criminals using the technology to hide from law enforcement outweighs the benefits of ordinary people wanting to keep their data and communications private.

The frustrating thing about all of this is how little the conversation has changed in the last six months. Comey and his counterparts at the NSA keep saying that they want lawful, technologically sound ways to access encrypted data if they are given permission to do so by a judge. People who understand the technology keep telling them that such a system is not possible.

“A serious debate is happening in an environment that’s almost devoid of technical input”

Let’s just reiterate that for a moment. In order to create alternate ways of accessing encrypted data, necessarily you must create a security hole or a backdoor into that data. When you purposefully create security holes, those holes can be exploited by others (i.e. not the FBI or the NSA). Therefore, is it really still encryption anymore?
“The notion that electronic devices and communications could never be unlocked or unencrypted—even when a judge has decided that the public interest requires accessing this data to find evidence—is troubling,” FBI Executive Assistant Director Amy Hess wrote in a Wall Street Journal editorial. “It may be time to ask: Is that a cost we, as a society, are prepared to pay?”
She said the move to “ubiquitous encryption” will usher in an era in which criminals will run free after hiding incriminating evidence “without fear of discovery by the police.”
It’s time for the FBI and NSA to tell us what they really want. Because for the last six months, both agencies have been repeatedly asking for something that is simply technologically impossible. When confronted with that fact, the agencies resort to the sort of rhetoric that shows up in Hess’s editorial and in Comey’s speeches. They favor “robust encryption as a key tool to strengthen cybersecurity,” but what does that mean? Who can have encryption, and what kind of encryption can they have?
It’s worth noting that, until recently, the FBI recommended that you encrypt your phone. It’s also worth noting that the man who wrote the Patriot Act thinks you should be allowed to use encryption.
NSA Administrator Michael Rogers has proposed what is known as a “split key” system—one in which a phone manufacturer would create an extra encryption key and then distribute its “parts” to different entities. It’s kind of like escrow—someone holds the key to unlock your phone or your email or whatever. If the NSA or FBI gets a warrant to decrypt the data, it’ll go to that escrow holder and get the key, and then have access to all of your data.

How are you going to make all these keys and keep them separate? What happens if someone gets ahold of them?

The problems with this suggestion are numerous. Who holds the key? Who can you trust with the key? Joseph Lorenzo Hall, chief technologist with the Center for Democracy and Technology, calls it “not a serious proposal,” for lots of reasons. The FBI and NSA act as though the United States is the only country in the world that wants access to encrypted data. It’s not.
American companies are overwhelmingly dominant globally, and companies like Apple, Google, Facebook, and Twitter make heaps of cash overseas. Facebook and Twitter both have a history of caving to the demands of autocratic governments when faced with the possibility of being shut down. So, if the US gets its “golden key” for WhatsApp users, does Turkey get one too? Does Pakistan? Does China? Does Russia? How are you going to make all these keys and keep them separate? What happens if someone gets ahold of them?
And what happens to those

American companies who are shipping products globally with built-in backdoors allowing US law enforcement to access user data? Such a provision doesn’t seem likely to go over well in, say, Germany.

This conundrum is the exact same one that the US ran into back in 1997, Hall wrote:
“We demonstrated [in 1997] that there would be no provable secure way to communicate using split key key escrow systems, so certain types of sensitive transactions involving health information, financial information, and intimate information would be more vulnerable to interception in the case of a flaw, compromise, or abuse of the system. Also, securing repositories of keying material, validating requests for keys, and distributing keys would be exceedingly complex, and likely much more complex than the underlying encryption itself.
This is costly to say the least, but it can also be dangerous in that adding complexity to a system will inevitably lead to additional methods to undermine it and find vulnerabilities that can be used to attack it.”
This is also the exact same conclusion reached by Matthew D. Green, a security researcher at Johns Hopkins University. Here is the premise of a recent blog post he wrote: “Let’s pretend that encryption backdoors are a great idea. From a purely technical point of view, what do we need to do to implement them, and how achievable is it?”
Green’s entire blog post is worth reading, because he does outline several ways in which such a system could be implemented. Each of those backdoors essentially amount to attacks on encryption that would A) not work, B) be ridiculously expensive and difficult to implement, or C) create unnecessary and exploitable vulnerabilities. Green is widely seen as one of the best in the business when it comes to this stuff. He is at the top of his field and is widely respected. Basically, he knows his shit.

The NSA and the FBI are not offering technical solutions, they are not offering alternatives, they are fear mongering.

And here is the conclusion he reaches:
“If this post has been more questions than answers, that’s because there really are no answers right now. A serious debate is happening in an environment that’s almost devoid of technical input, at least from technical people who aren’t part of the intelligence establishment.”
The Washington Post notes in an article outlining the split key idea that both the NSA and the FBI won’t or can’t name one single instance in which they were unable to thwart a terrorist or punish a criminal because they couldn’t break encryption. Likewise, the NSA and the FBI are plugging their ears and screaming about “bad guys” and “darkness” when it comes to encryption. They are not offering technical solutions, they are not offering alternatives, they are fear mongering.
So, what does the intelligence community want? Do they want to ban encryption for consumers? Do they want to create a system of weak encryption that can be attacked by any hackers with a modicum of skill?
It is very likely that sometime in the future, a criminal will walk free because he had the foresight to encrypt incriminating evidence. Thing is, there are far more crimes committed against ordinary people who don’t use encryption than there are criminals who will walk free . Does the intelligence community think that a future without locks is going to make us safer overall?

Billionaires: Who Needs ‘Em?

Posted: April 20, 2015 in World news
American Billionaire Warren Buffett On A Two-Day Tour Of Israel

In a world in which Gordon Gecko’s tagline “greed is good” has become more of a mantra than a funny off-hand comment, America’s rich are finding new ways to get even more wealthy — and fast. Since the financial crisis and recession kicked in, a huge amount of economic gains — 116%, in fact — have gone to the nation’s wealthiest citizens. As a result, an entire new wave of millionaires and billionaires have been christened, while the vast majority of Americans have continued toughing it out under some of the harshest economic conditions since before the first World War.
Without question, the increasing numbers of individuals holding fortunes in the seven, and even ten figures, has grown. This has come as a result of a number of different things, among them policies that favor the rich like market deregulation and favorable taxation rates. While the creation of wealth and lifting of individuals to high levels of prosperity is really the ultimate goal, it is it really the best thing for the economy?
Since the financial crisis, the number of billionaires in the world has nearly doubled, according to a report from charity Oxfam International. In March 2009, there were 743 people in the world who were certified billionaires. As of March this year, that number is

1,645, an increase of more than 45%. That is an incredibly high rate of growth, in only five short years.

So, who are these people, and how are they making all of that money?
According to Forbes, the world’s richest people command wealth totaling $6.5 trillion. Of all that money, 13% of those billionaires inherited it, 21% received a huge sum of money and simply added onto it, and the remaining two-thirds built their fortunes themselves, through business ventures or investing.
With those figures in mind, and the rapid rate of new entrants to the billionaire club, we come back to the question of whether or not having so much wealth concentrated in the hands of so few is a good thing. As with almost everything, there isn’t an easy answer.
There are those that argue that the world’s economies are dependent on billionaires. There are plenty of people who earn their fortunes, and then turn around and put that money back into the economy through investments or expanding their business ventures, which provides jobs and wages for everyone else. Then there are those who purchase yachts and sit on their fortunes, enjoying life to the fullest. While it’s hard to blame them, you can question whether or not doing that is of any actual value to the economy.
But the fact remains that many of the world’s wealthiest do add significant value, and hold incredibly important roles in the economy. A report from the American Enterprise Institute holds fast to the notion that while America is plagued by a myriad of issues, an overabundance of billionaires is not one of them. The basic argument is that while giant companies like GM used to employ huge numbers of people 50 years ago, the world’s biggest and most profitable companies can now get by on a fraction of that amount. Therefore, we need more entrepreneurs with plenty of capital to go into business and building successful companies.
“America needs more Mark Zuckerbergs, not fewer, writes the report’s author, James Pethokoukis. “How to create them? There is no magic formula, but Henrekson and Sanandaji find the rate of billionaire entrepreneurs correlates positively with nations that have lower taxes, more venture capital investment, and less regulation. High capital gains taxes seem particularly harmful.”
“While inequality hasn’t made it harder to get on the success ladder, it does make it more costly to stay stuck at the bottom. A more entrepreneurial U.S. economy generating more high-paying jobs will ensure more people are making that climb to the top rungs,” he concludes.
There may be something to Pethokoukis’ argument, but then again, the very things he is arguing for are widely considered to be the catalysts behind growing inequality and other problems in the economy. Not that his argument is without merit, but the idea that inequality hasn’t made it finding success any more difficult is shaky.
For one, the cost of access to education is wildly out of control, and shutting many in the poor and middle class out altogether. This creates barriers to entry for those looking to even climb into the middle class from poverty, and only goes to widen the inequality gap even more. Of course, there are exceptions, but rags-to-riches stories are hardly the norm in America.
“Children from low-income families have only a 1 percent chance of reaching the top 5 percent of the income distribution, versus children of the rich who have about a 22 percent chance,” writes Tom Hertz of American University, in his report Understanding Mobility in America, written in 2006. You’d have to imagine those odds have worsened following the recession, and college tuition has risen 15% on average between 2008 and 2010 across the board, according to USA Today, making it even more unaffordable to those who need it most.
But those are just problems with getting an education. As billionaires have widened their influence in the political system, policies are being passed that are likely augmenting any problems the country was already experiencing. By using arguments for job creation, the wealthy have been able to successfully get rid of certain regulations, utilize tax loopholes and push money into political campaigns, leading to fears of a plutocratic future. The effects of cronyism, as opposed to free market capitalism, along with stagnating wages and other factors, have contributed mightily to the growth of many of the nation’s wealthy individuals, likely helping bump them up into the billionaire’s club.
While that’s good for a small slice of the overall population, whether or not its a good thing for everyone else brings up some serious questions.
Again, there are plenty of arguments as to why more billionaires is a good thing, and why it could be a bad thing. The fact of the matter is, we’re living in an age where we’ll get a more definitive answer relatively soon, with some data to prove it. With the world’s population of billionaires effectively doubling every decade, according to the current growth rate from 2009-2014, the effects should become even more pronounced and obvious.

Predecessor Lamborghini Murciélago
The Lamborghini Aventador is a mid-engined sports car produced by the Italian manufacturer Automobili Lamborghini.
Launched on 28 February 2011 at the Geneva Motor Show, five months after its initial unveiling in Sant’Agata Bolognese, the vehicle, internally codenamed LB834, was designed to replace the ten-year-old Murciélago as the new flagship model.
Soon after the Aventador unveiling, Lamborghini announced that it had already sold over 12 of the production vehicles, with deliveries starting in the second half of 2011.

Background

The Aventador was designed by Italian designer Filippo Perini. Similar to the earlier limited-editionLamborghini Reventon, its heavy use of sharp creases and planar surfaces are indicative of Lamborghini’s contemporary styling direction which were directly inspired by the aircraft of the United States Military’s Stealth Fighter Program, namely the F-117A Nighthawk and the F-22 Raptor.
In keeping with Lamborghini tradition, the Aventador is also named after a fighting bull. Aventador was a bull that fought particularly valiantly in the bull ring of Saragossa, Spain in 1993.

Aventador LP 700-4

Production will be limited to 4,000 units (4,099 Murciélagos were built). The molds used to make the carbon-fibre monocoque are expected to last 500 units each and only 8 have been made. The base price of the Aventador is $393,695.
The car’s shape also borrows heavily from Lamborghini’s limited-edition Reventón and their Estoque concept car.
The vehicle was unveiled at Lummus Park, Miami, followed by Miami International Airport, followed by Auto China 2014 (with Nazionale configuration via Lamborghini Ad Personam personalization program).

Aventador LP 700-4 Roadster

The 2013 Aventador LP 700-4 Roadster was announced for production on 27 December 2012, equipped with the same V12 engine as the coupé version, Lamborghini claims again that it can reach 100 km/h (62 mph) in 2.9 seconds and a top speed equaling that of the coupe, at 349 km/h (217 mph).
The removable roof consists of two carbon fiber panels, weighing 6 kg (13 lb) each, which required the reinforcement of the rear pillar to compensate for the loss of structural integrity as well as to accommodate the rollover protection and ventilations systems for the engine. The panels are of easy removal and are stored in the front luggage compartment. The Aventador Roadster has a unique engine cover design and an attachable wind deflector to improve cabin airflow at high speed as well as a gloss black finish in the A-pillars, windshield header, roof panels, and rear window area. The car has a US$441,600 base price. With a total weight of 1,625 kg (3,583 lb) it’s only 50 kg (110 lb) heavier than the coupé (the weight of the roof, plus additional stiffening in the sills and A-pillars).

Special editions

Aventador J

Lamborghini Aventador J

Six months after unveiling the Aventador, plans for a roadster version were leaked by the U.S. EPA after it included the model on a data sheet on its website. Lamborghini officially unveiled the Aventador J to the world at the 2012 Geneva Motor Show. The roofless and windowless concept car uses the same V12 engine as the standard Aventador, producing 700 hp through a lightweight seven-speed automated transmission. The car does not have air conditioning or radio to save further weight for a total of 3,472 pounds (1,575 kg). The car presented at the Geneva show was the only unit to be produced, and was sold forUS$2.8 million. Another Limited Edition model was made for Shaikh Al Yahyaa and was sold at an unknown price. The car was specially made for a close relation.
The J designation was thought to have come from Appendix J in the FIA rulebook that describes the technical specifications of race cars. However, during an interview with designer Filippo Perini, it was revealed that the ‘J’ actually stands for Jota, in reference to a 1970s one off Lamborghini Miura Jota, which also conformed to the FIA’s Appendix J regulations.

Aventador LP 750-4 SuperVeloce (2015)

2015 Lamborghini Aventador at the 2015 Geneva Motor Show

Lamborghini Aventador LP 750-4 Superveloce was announced in March 2015 at the Geneva Motor Show. Representing the essence of Lamborghini’s brand it features an upgraded power train, with maximum horsepower increased to 559 kW (750 bhp) from the standard coupé’s 522 kW (700 bhp). Combined with weight reduction of 50 kg (110 lb) from increased usage of carbon fiber both inside and outside the car the LP750-4 SV boasts a power to weight ratio of 1 hp to 2 kg. The car also features increased aerodynamics, with downforce increased by 180% as compared to the standard Aventador coupé. Notable aerodynamic upgrades are a revised front splitter and rear diffuser, and a rear wing. The supercar is available in 34 base colors. The car’s driving dynamics have also been ungraded, featuring new enhanced electronic steering for superior maneuverability at high speeds, magnetic pushrod suspension for superior handling, and chassis improvements to increase rigidity. Overall the LP750-4 SV’s standing 0–100 km/h (0–62 mph) time is decreased from 2.9 seconds to 2.8 seconds, with the theoretical top speed still “somewhere in excess” of 349 km/h (217 mph). Delivery of the car is scheduled to begin in the second quarter of 2015.

Reception

On 31 July 2011, the Aventador was reviewed by the motorsport show Top Gear. Host Richard Hammond was impressed with the performance and handling of the car. His biggest complaint was a nostalgic poke at the Aventador’s accessible temperament, implying that it left him longing for the “danger” associated with driving previous Lamborghini supercars. The Aventador posted the fifth fastest time ever recorded on the Top Gear test track with a time of 1:16.5, beating the $2,000,000 Bugatti Veyron Super Sport, the Ferrari Enzo, the Porsche 911 GT3, and other supercars from around the world. In season 18 of the program, cohost Jeremy Clarkson said that the Aventador is better than the Ferrari 458 Italia (which they had previously called the best super car ever), describing it as being “£200,000 worth of dreams.” The Aventador won the “Supercar of the Year 2011” from Top Gear.

Marketing

Robert Gülpen of RGE Robert Gülpen Engineering GmbH produced a 1/8-scale model Aventador LP 700-4 that was sold through an auction December 2011 with starting bid price of US$4.7 million (€3.5 million). A second model, featuring gold wrapping at body, was set to go for sale at auction with a starting bid price ofUS$7.5 million.
BMC Switzerland produced a limited (50 units) edition of Lamborghini 50th Anniversary Edition impec bicycles inspired by the Lamborghini Aventador. The vehicle was sold for €25,000 (US$32,000) via international BMC or Lamborghini dealer network, with delivery done by the dealer.
